Magic: The Gathering (MTG) is one of the most enduring and collectible trading card games of all time with a global following well into the millions and being seen as a game for both adults and children. First released in 1993, it was the first of its kind and has seen many sets, different play styles and new and reprinted cards be released since then.

As such, some of them have become highly sort after by competitive players and collectors alike. Given that each booster pack is essentially supposed to be a pocket money purchase, turning up one of these in your collection could get you some serious returns. Here we take a look at some of the most desirable and pricey cards in the game.

Early Sets

With MTG going for nearly 35 years, it’s perhaps no surprise that the earlier cards, before it became such an international phenomenon, are the most highly sought-after. With an initial print run that saw only a limited number of cards produced, a full set was just 295 individual cards. Now, often referred to as Alpha, the cards from this run can fetch a pretty penny (if in good condition) and are still lauded by collectors.

Lord of the Pit is one such card found in the original set with only 1008 in existence. One of the first ever creature cards, it’s a powerful being that demands a sacrifice of other creatures otherwise it deals damage to you. A high-quality version of the card could fetch up to $100,000 at auction and is much cherished by players of the game.

Another Alpha card that has hit similar heights in value is the Copy Artifact card. It has been reprinted in other sets, but an original version could fetch you anywhere between $4,000 and $100,000, on the right day.

Mind Twist was released in the second set of MTG cards (now known as Beta), and it is speculated that there are only around 16 versions of the card left in the world. A card that targets an opponent’s hand, it can twist a game significantly in your favour. As such, it’s power and rarity saw one sell for $208,940.

The Power Nine

The Power Nine are a group of cards printed in the early editions of the game that are so powerful they are often considered ‘broken’ in modern play, giving one player a significant advantage when played. As such, they have been limited in their reprints and are only allowed in very selective competitive games. As such, all of them can garner pretty large sums of money and are wanted by collectors and players alike. These cards are: Ancestral Recall, Black Lotus, Mox Emerald, Mox Jet, Mox Pearl, Mox Ruby, Mox Sapphire, Timetwister, and Time Walk.

Mox Ruby has been confirmed to sell for around $24,000, with unconfirmed reports even suggesting one was sold for near $47,000. It allows a player to play it anytime and can then be used to add one red mana to their mana pool, which means, if used well, it can throw a game completely off balance. As such, it was restricted in 1994 and is now extremely desirable.

Perhaps the rarest and most wanted of the Power Nine, and maybe all MTG cards, is a Black Lotus. Appearing in Alpha and Beta sets, both versions have immense value and only around 1,000 exist. On average, they sell for around $615,000. However, in 2024, a pristine version of the card sold for an eye-watering $3 million in a private sale, making it one of the most valuable trading cards of all time.

Limited Editions

In more recent years, MTG has been no stranger to collaborations and limited editions that have seen other brands and franchises feature on the cards. Because of this, these cards are often clamoured for by fans of the game and those who love the other brands too making them instantly valuable and only going on to surge in price later. Some such collabs have included Sonic the Hedgehog, Fallout, and Dungeons and Dragons.

However, one of the most notable crossover collections was The Lord of The Rings set of cards that featured famous characters, locations and items from the fantasy films and books. As part of this, one special card was printed as The One Ring, boasting original artwork of the mythical item on which the story is centred around and using the  language known as Black Speech, devised by the author J.R.R. Tolkien for his epic novels. Once unearthed, the card was sold for a whopping $2,640,000! What’s more, it was sold to the rapper Post Malone, so many have speculated that this would add even more value, as fans of his would now have an interest in it, should he ever choose to shift it on.

With such jaw-dropping sums of money being bandied around, card games can often be seen as toys for adults. However, those who love the game no there’s no age limit to the fun and will just collect cards to build their decks and enjoy some good fun, whether it’s competitive or casual.
