What is the correct order of the Lord Of The Rings Movies?

JRR Tolkien’s epic fantasy adventure, The Lord of The Rings was published as a trilogy of novels between 1954 and 1955. With many film and TV adaptations across the world since then, the most notable being Peter Jackson’s groundbreaking and multi-Oscar winning series of films, released between 2001 and 2003, also a trilogy in the same order of the books.

‘The Fellowship of The Ring’ is the first of these, following the journey of a young Hobbit named Frodo, and his friends, as he is plunged into a perilous task of seeking guidance on what to do with a rediscovered ring of power that could lead to catastrophic consequences for the whole of Middle Earth should it fall into the hands of the Dark Lord Sauron. The second film is ‘The Two Towers’, where the armies of good and evil start to amass, as Frodo’s allies try to buy him time to get to Mount Doom where he must cast the ring into the fires from which it is forged. The third and final movie is ‘The Return of the King’, where battles rage and Frodo nears his quest’s end. An unbelievably detailed story of friendship and the consequences of doing what is right vs. what is easy, it’s well worth sitting through the daunting run time of all of these films for an adventure unlike any other that has touched the hearts of children and grown-ups alike.

Should I watch The Hobbit or Lord Of The Rings first?

‘The Hobbit’ was Tolkien’s first book in his tales of Middle Earth, published in 1937 and following the hapless Hobbit Bilbo Baggins as he is begrudgingly thrown into a quest to help a Dwarven party reclaim their ancestral home from the fire breathing dragon Smaug. Along the way, he unknowingly discovers the ring of power that the mysterious cave-dwelling creature Gollum is obsessed with.

Written for a younger audience than ‘The Lord of The Rings’, the story precedes what happens in LoTR but the trilogy of Hobbit films, Starring Martin Freeman, were released between 2012 and 2014, over a decade after ‘The Lord of The Rings’ movies. As such, you’ll be at no disadvantage if you watch either trilogy first as they do a great job of filling in the necessary details, but in terms of a linear timeline, ‘The Hobbit’ takes place a long time before the events of ‘The Lord of the Rings’.
