What is Magic: The Gathering?
Magic: The Gathering (MTG) is the first modern trading card game that has become a global sensation since its introduction to tabletop gamers in 1993. In fact, it can be said that it is the archetype for trading card games as we know them.
The notion is that you and your opponents go to battle against one another, summoning creatures, casting spells and using artifacts to lower their life score from 20 to 0. The formula has been copied, parodied and lampooned in pop culture but MTG remains incredibly popular with over 50 million players worldwide leading to a lot of collectibles and memorabilia also becoming available.
Is Magic the Gathering the hardest game to play?
While some potential new players may be put off by the game jargon and many different play styles, in essence the game boils down to the very simple mechanic of doing everything you can to remove life points. It’s very easy to get a hold of the core mechanics, while mastering it tactically may take some time. While there’s no entry barrier to play, it can often be seen as a toy for older children and adults due to the need to leverage some tactical nous.
MTG offers a free online game to learn the rules via their website, as well as branching out into gaming with other video games that bring the realms found in the card game to life. You can also find foundation sets that help new starters learn the rules and be able to play instantly along the way.
Is Magic: The Gathering Skill or Luck?
MTG combines skill and luck, with the idea being that you lead up to building your own decks of cards, utilising what you’ve collected or traded, to create unique battle-ready decks that play to your strengths. Predicting and reacting to your opponent’s moves is a key part of the game, as well as manoeuvring them into a position that is advantageous for you.
However, as with many other trading card games, there is an element of luck depending on what cards you draw and at what period in the game, so even the most skilled player can find themselves in hot water if things don’t go their way.
