Mothering Sunday holds a special place in the calendar for many people, steeped in history from the 16^th century the meaning of the day has transitioned from travelling to re-new your faith at your ‘mother church’ on the 4^th Sunday of Lent to an opportunity to celebrate and honour your own Mother.

Traditions on Mother’s Day

Many different traditions have been formed across the world, many countries hold a national day of observance to celebrate mothers in May, in the UK the day continues to be celebrated on the 4^th Sunday of Lent and small gifts of flowers and cake are presented from the children to their Mum.

In Japan and Australia pink and red carnations and chrysanthemums are popular gifts, Mexican children stay home on Mother’s Day Eve to spend time with their Mum before heading out for family meals the next day, in Italy the day often ends with a heart shape cake dessert after a full day of pampering and eating out and in India and Peru Mother’s Day celebrations can run over a week or month as mother’s are celebrated with festivals and special events.
