Valentines Day isn’t just about couples. when you have a family, you’ll probably need to change up your traditional Valentines date night and find ways to celebrate that include everyone. It’s a great opportunity to build a new family tradition and celebrate love and friendship with those closest to you.

Creating New Family Traditions on Valentines Day

Planning a few simple activities that will appeal to all age groups is the key to a fun bonding experience that your family will want to repeat year after year. Add some snacks and a little bit of creativity and you have a cosy, budget-friendly Valentine day that everyone in your household can enjoy.

We’ve put together some of our favourite ideas for a love-themed celebration with the whole family.

Crafty Valentine’s Card Making

Sending cards has always been at the heart of Valentines’ day traditions and it’s an activity that even your very youngest will love getting involved in. Try making cards for each other, extended family members or friends. A neighbour living on their own could also be a grateful recipient for homemade card. We love the idea of sitting down at the table with a bunch of supplies and seeing what comes out of the chaos! Gather together scrap paper, old magazines, wrapping paper, tissue and any other crafty supplies you’ve saved, grab a few glue sticks and give each family member a piece of folded coloured card to create their Valentine’s masterpiece on.

If you want to top up your craft stash, our bumper craft kit has everything you might need for a creative card making session:

Luxury Pamper Night

A Valentines pamper night is the perfect excuse for some family time. Light some candles, dish out dressing gowns and whip up an easy oatmeal and honey facepack with ingredients you probably already have to make something suitable for all ages and skin types. You could even add a few cucumber slices for the full spa day effect.

Family playing board game

Big Board Games Night

Improve their literacy, maths and other key learning skills with a fun family games night. Playing competitive games with those you love also helps to strengthen bonds and create great memories (as long as everyone can handle losing!). Games with hilarious or ridiculous elements are a great to break the ice and get everyone laughing, then buckle in for more serious competition with classic board games such as Cluedo, Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit which offer new skills, like problem-solving, logic, money handling and general knowledge. Dig out games you haven’t played in a while, or browse our extensive collection here. Make it even more fun by offering little rewards or sweet treats for the winners or at certain points in the game, like rolling a six or landing on a certain square.

Family stargazing

Stargazing Night

If your family are the outdoorsy type, take advantage of the night sky during February and plan a memorable night under the stars. If you have little ones, wrap up warm and head to your own back garden. It’s the ideal place to point out some of celestial bodies visible this winter. Venus and Jupiter are both easy to spot in the West just after sunset and a basic pair of binoculars will make them much clearer. Pack a flask of a warming winter soup, some Valentine’s treats and a thick blanket or two for older children and teenagers who might enjoy travelling further afield. With binoculars or a telescope, you might also catch a glimpse of a rare comet travelling past Earth around 14th February. Take a look on the UK Space Agency website for all the information you need.

We hope we’ve inspired you to create a fun new family tradition this Valentines Day.
