When it comes to superhero showdowns, there’s plenty of fun to be had with hypothetical debates on who is the strongest Marvel Avenger, who’d win in a race between Sonic the Hedgehog vs DC comics’ The Flash, and could Thor hold their own against Superman?

Pitting the various strengths and weaknesses of these modern-day myths against one another can be great fun, especially when they have similar skillsets, and one we’ve found constantly crops up is Hulk vs Rhino.
Marvel fans love to match up these colossi of clobbering strengths against one another and mull over their relative merits, so we’ve taken it upon ourselves to consider the match up and offer our opinion.

Meet the Contenders

The Incredible Hulk: Gamma Powered Rage

A mean, green, smashing machine, the Hulk has been an icon of comics, film and television since the early 1960s. The alter ego of mild-mannered Bruce Banner, an accident with his scientific experiments exposed him to gamma rays and now, when he gets angry, he becomes a hulking green monster.

Like a modern-day Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the angrier the Hulk gets, the stronger he becomes meaning that there is no upper limit to his strength, but he can become uncontrollable with his rage. There are many versions of the Hulk with some using Banner’s intelligence to control Hulk’s strength to maximise his potential smashing power!

Rhino: The Armoured Juggernaut

Rhino is one of Spider-man’s most iconic enemies and a highly fearsome foe! A Russian mobster who underwent an experimental procedure to gain super strength and bond a highly durable polymer onto his skin, he now resembles an anthropomorphic rhinoceros (hence the name) with the capability of causing massive amounts of destruction.

Pursuing a life of crime, Rhino is a prominent problem for Spidey and his amazing friends as a recurring villain for both the wise cracking web-slinger and Hulk. Slow to start, once he builds up a head of steam, he’s almost unstoppable as he smashes his way through obstacles.

Power Comparison: Hulk vs Rhino

Strength:

With almost limitless strength, the Hulk’s power increases exponentially with his anger, the more enraged he becomes the stronger he is. In fact, we’ve never seen his upper limit in the comic books as he’s punched his way through asteroids and literally lifted mountains.

Conversely, Rhino does have defined limits on his strength with an impressive ability to smash through buildings and knock over armoured vehicles with ease. His superhuman power means he can lift about 75 tons, easily able to throw cars and cause chaos making him quite the headache for our heroes to deal with but well below Hulk’s peak.

Durability:

Both brutes have an impressive defence to them, able to withstand massive amounts of damage. Rhino’s bonded armour covers almost the entirety of his body, except his face, and protects him from high calibre explosions and is resistant to most attacks on it.

The Hulk can also deal with blasters, with an incredible healing factor that makes him able to withstand most things, including being in extreme environments. His powers coming from gamma radiation mean he’s impervious to nuclear explosions, as well as being able to survive in the deep sea and even space.

Speed:

You’d think that these lumbering titans would be relatively slow but they both hold surprising agility for their size. Rhino is a slow starter but has unstoppable momentum, once up to speed. His manoeuvrability does rather suffer though, with poor turning making him vulnerable to more nimble opponents, which is often how Spider-man betters him.

Hulk also has a bit of pace to him, but it’s not what he’s known for. It’s how he uses his strength that works for him in battle as he can leap miles in a single bound and react quickly to different situations.

Intelligence:

Neither of our combatants are noted for their intelligence, with many iterations of Hulk being ones of pure rage, led by their base emotions and often easily manipulated. That being said, he has been known to learn and adapt strategically to his surroundings. Bruce Banner is a genius scientist, and, in some timelines, he learns to control Hulk so that he combines strength and smarts.

Rhino is known as one of Spider-man’s most dim-witted villains who makes impulsive decisions and relies solely on brute force. As such, he’s regularly pushed to the limits of his frustration where he will make poor choices and end up being defeated.

Strengths and Weaknesses: Hulk vs Rhino

The Hulk’s unlimited power ceiling makes him an intriguing prospect. Rage serves to his advantage so the more harm you do, the stronger he becomes. This paradoxical strength means he becomes increasingly more dangerous the more harm you do. Combine this with an incredible healing factor and he is a very frightening fighting force. He’s also greatly versatile and has a vast array of experience in battling all sorts of characters, making him adept at many different combat situations.

His weakness lies in the theoretical ability to calm him down. If you can return him to a human state, he suddenly becomes far more vulnerable to physical attack although he is now a lot smarter in his Dr. Bruce Banner form. This in itself could be a challenge as Hulk can be tricked by savvy challengers who can use their smarts against him. He also has some vulnerability to magic but, in this situation, it’s not relevant as Rhino has no magical abilities.

Rhino also struggles with brighter fighters so is likely to struggle with someone with some tactical nous. Hulk should have the edge on him here but is not known for his thinking prowess. It’s his charge that really sets him apart and it’s vital for anyone taking on this human tank to stop him before he builds up too much speed. But lacking in intelligence and agility makes him a large, easy to avoid target that can be manipulated.

Battle Scenarios

In an urban setting, both are likely to cause lots of destruction and Rhino is less likely to be concerned by this than Hulk. As such, the Hulk may struggle to get Rhino out of the way of others.
In an open field, Hulk can easily use his superior jumping abilities to his advantage with Rhino unable to use the landscape to his advantage.

What Comic Book History Shows

The two have come up against one another on several occasions with the Hulk often bettering Rhino, sometimes through strength and sometimes through smarts. Often the Hulk will struggle initially but end up overpowering Rhino in the end so, it would seem, that Hulk has the history of victory behind him.
The pair have sometimes fought to a standstill, but Rhino has never definitively beaten Hulk so the odds of him doing so in another head-to-head are unlikely.

The Verdict: Hulk vs Rhin – Who Would Win?

Given his ability to gain greater strength, his greater agility and his marginally better intelligence, it should be expected that the Hulk would win this one-on-one without too much trouble, although Rhino might cause him some problems early on.
That’s not to say Rhino couldn’t win though should Hulk be already weakened of if he teamed up with other villains to take him down.
