Ken’s Timeline 

Ken was created in March 1961 by Elliot Handler, husband of Ruth Handler, who created Barbie a few years prior.  

But when was Ken introduced? He was introduced at the American International Toy Fair dressed in red bathing suit trunks with a yellow towel and sandals. He came in 2 versions: blond or brunette.  

The doll was named after Ruth and Elliot Handler’s son, Kenneth.  

Ken’s full name is Kenneth Sean Carson. 

This cool doll might not be as famous as his friend, but he has been and always will be a part of Barbie’s life.  He rocks a variety of styles, careers, and accessories just like Barbie. How Many Ken Dolls Are There? 

Ken dolls are available in four body types, eighteen sculpts, thirteen skin tones, nine eye colours and twenty-two hair colours. With Barbie added in, the brand boasts more than 35 skin tones, 94 hairstyles and 9 body types!  

Quite an amazing range with plenty to choose from. 

Are All Boy Barbie Dolls Called Ken? 

Mostly, yes.  

However, there are a handful of male characters in the Barbie universe that have other names such as Allan Sherwood, Ken’s little brother Tommy, Blaine (Barbie’s ex-boyfriend), and Ryan (a main character in the Dreamhouse animated series).

Does Ken Have a Job? 

Much like Barbie, Ken had a variety of occupations. He has had at least 40 different occupations during his 60 years of existence, such as astronaut, dentist, doctor, firefighter, football player, barista, fashion model, lifeguard, pilot, rock star, science teacher and a spy.

  • Ken and Barbie are friends. 
  • Ken is 2 years younger than his famous Barbie, his official birthday is on 11th March 1961. Looking pretty good for his age! 
  • Ken is exactly 12 inches tall, which makes him half an inch taller than Barbie.
  • Ken is from a fictional town called Willows, Wisconsin.  

 Ken’s Key Dates: 

  •  In 1973, Mod Hair Ken was introduced and was the first Ken to have rooted hair. He came with a moustache, beard, and sideburn decals that you could add to his face. 
  • In 1984, Ken got his very first car, the Dream ‘Vette to allow him to take Barbie out on dates, and travel out and about. 
  • In 1997, Ken’s little brother Tommy got introduced to the world.
