“No job is too big, no pup is too small!”

This is the iconic rallying cry of Paw Patrol, a gang of doggy do-gooders who em’bark’ on radical rescue missions around their hometown of Adventure Bay.

A hit TV show that follows these heroic rescue pups, they’ve captured hearts worldwide, but is it right for your child? Here, we take a look at what age they should start watching, when they are likely to grow out of it, and why children are so obsessed with cartoon dogs.

What is Paw Patrol?

The basic concept of Paw Patrol is that a team of rescue pups, led by 10-year-old boy Ryder, have specialised skills that come in handy when their calamitous town of Adventure Bay needs saving (something that happens in every episode).

With a lot of problem solving and teamwork, the episodes promote the power of friendship and working together. Each episode is usually 15 to 25 minutes long, making them ideal for young attention spans.

With an array of cool and quirky characters, there’s a pup for everyone to love.

Chase: The de-facto leader of the gang, Chase is a German Shepherd who is also a police dog.

Marshall: A fire-fighting dalmatian puppy, Marshall can be clumsy when he’s not dealing with fires or helping others with injuries.

Skye: A cockapoo who takes to the skies to perform air rescues.

Rocky: A mixed breed dog who takes recycling and reusing things very seriously.

Rubble: A construction pup who’s great at clear up when a disaster hits Adventure Bay.

Zuma: A labrador who loves the water, Zuma is always on hand for water rescue.

Everest: A happy Husky who helps out when snow rescue is needed.

Tracker: A potcake dog who lives in the jungle, Tracker’s there to help you get out of tight spots.

With more and more dogs joining the Paw Patrol all the time, especially when they find themselves in new settings or on unique adventures, there’s a favourite for everyone.

Launched in 2013, its popularity quickly took off and now there are hundreds of episodes, several films and plenty of merchandise to get your paws on.

It’s become a cultural phenomenon across the globe with live touring shows and theme park attractions to boot. Children can’t get enough of the colourful adventures and the cute dogs.

The Paw Patrol Official Age Rating

Although the Paw Patrol are rescuing people, the show’s content is genuinely gentle stuff with very little to worry about. Designed for preschoolers, its bright colours and formulaic storytelling is primarily aimed at 2- to 5-year-olds, although some children enjoy it from 18-months and plenty watch it until they are 7 or 8 years old.

Every child is different so they could well find comfort in it for many years, with the heroic actions and fun characters easy to identify with for all ages. At just 11 minutes long, each episode is great for short attention spans and the clearly defined demarcation of good and bad leaves no ambiguous moral grey areas to confuse.

In the United States, the show is rated TV-Y, which is for all children, and in the UK, they are typically rated U (Universal) by the BBFC with only mild threat noted.

18 months – 2 Years: Emerging Interest

Little ones won’t really follow the storylines too closely at this age but will love the cute animals and amazing vehicles. It’s more about the sound and visuals than understanding what’s going on so short viewing sessions are probably best.

Episodes with music and songs, and focussing on just one pup, will be best for grabbing them. Keep it simple as the thrill of the sirens and engine sounds will probably be more than enough to grab their attention.

In terms of toys for this age group, soft toys and plushies are probably the best way to go but there are also plenty of chunky push along vehicles, and even musical toys that will keep them engaged. Just make sure there are no small parts or things that can be easily broken or pulled apart.

3 – 4 Years: Peak Paw Patrol Age

These are the golden years to really enjoy Paw Patrol as it’s perfectly pitched for their brain development. The problem solving on screen is of an achievable level for young minds and they can follow along with the storylines, and the on-screen repetition can provide comfort at this stage.

It may seem simplistic, but children start to pick up a lot from the media they are watching at this age. With the pups’ different roles, children begin to learn about real world jobs as well as teamwork and cooperation.

The problem-solving strategies that come to the fore play out in easily digestible manners and the emotional vocabulary of bravery, pride, fear etc. all add to building language and a sense of self.

Play can now incorporate action figures and playsets, and that fandom may manifest itself in dress up play too.

5 – 6 Years: Sustained Interest

While the show still holds entertainment value, children will start to identify and predict patterns now and figure out solutions themselves.  There will be clear favourites amongst the characters as they start to gravitate towards certain personalities more so.

As such, collecting specific character toys may become more important and they might become more interested in the films and special episodes for a greater sense of variation.  They’ll start to create more complex play scenarios for themselves and may start to become interested in other rescue themed media.

7+ Years: Transitioning Out

This is when interest in the show will typically start to fade, although all children are different so may well find enjoyment in it for some time to come. They’ll start to want more complex storytelling, and the interest may still be there but far less intensely.

A younger sibling may mean they continue to watch along with them, and lingering attachment may hang around with toys and games that are special to them. The transition may be gradual, and it may remain a comfort watch when poorly, but the shift will be starting to happen.

Why Children Love Paw Patrol

Themes of heroism and always having positive outcomes feed the feeling of empowerment and the sense that they can help too. With nothing scary to worry about and positive role models on screen, it is comfortable viewing for young viewers.

With plenty of catchphrases and songs too, it has an element of interactivity and predictability. Children know where the story lines are going, and can find joy in the formulaic nature, while the different vehicles and their subsequent uses add that element of discovery.

Problems are clearly presented and have a satisfactory conclusion by the end of each episode, ensuring there are no overwhelming or unresolved issues. Encouraging the skills needed for problem solving, the emotions shown are also easily identifiable.

The Educational Value and Benefits

Those easy to identify problems make for a great base for teaching problem solving. By showing the simple way to identify and then combat issues, the show starts to develop those areas on how to approach unexpected occurrences. With various approaches, it shows how being positive in the face of adversity, and adaptability can all contribute to positive outcomes.

It also leans heavily on the value of teamwork and collaboration. Shared goals and celebrations are championed as positive things and utilising everyone’s unique skillset to help get to the result shows the power of working as one. This also comes with community helper awareness as it shows a view of firefighters, construction workers and police doing their jobs effectively.

Caring for animals and nature are ongoing themes with general responsibility of community and care being woven in throughout as well. The screentime with this show is genuinely educational and holds real value to young minds starting to learn more about the world.

Paw Patrol Toys by Age

For Toddlers (2-3 years): Soft toys of their favourite characters or large chunky figures without small parts are probably best. Try a Tonies figure to bring Paw Patrol storytelling to life without the screentime.

Preschoolers (3-5 years): Standard action figures and playsets may now become the norm and dress up costumes, puzzles and games are all great fun.

Older Fans (5-7 years): Complex playsets or even videogames may hold more interest for older children. Movie specific toys and collectibles might be more their speed now.

Always consider safety and pay attention to packaging. Be aware if younger siblings are around when playing with toys with small parts and make sure supervision matches the age range and specific toy.

When Your Child Outgrows Paw Patrol

Children will naturally progress away from Paw Patrol as they grow older so keep an eye out for less enthusiastic viewing habits and interests that expand away from the show.

Support the change positively and don’t force continued interest. If they’re no longer interested in the toys, consider donating them to younger children who still have a genuine interest and hold onto a few sentimental items if you want.

Returning to the show when ill or stressed is perfectly normal and that sense of nostalgia will be there for a while. This comfort in familiar things is quite a healthy reaction and there’s nothing wrong with occasional viewing.
