What is Wednesday, where did it originate from?

Wednesday is a Netflix streaming show that draws inspiration from The Addams Family comic strips, created by Cartoonist Charles Addams, and the subsequent film adaptations. A family of old-money gothic characters who revel in the macabre, they are seemingly unaware of how the rest of the world perceives their dark habits. Wednesday focuses on the eldest child of the family, a morose teen who craves solitude while she writes her murder mystery novel, and places her into a school for those with magical powers. When strange things start happening, she starts to investigate herself, leading to many weird and wonderful adventures.

A black comedy that ties together relatable messaging of teen angst and family feuds with fantasy elements and mysterious goings on, the gothic aesthetic has inspired many outfits, as well as direct cosplay with character costumes and more.

Why is she named Wednesday?

Monday’s child is fair of face,

Tuesday’s child is full of grace,

Wednesday’s child is full of woe,

Thursday’s child has far to go,

Friday’s child is loving and giving,

Saturday’s child works hard for a living,

But the child who is born on the Sabbath Day

Is bonny and blithe and good and gay.

A 19th-century nursery rhyme that supposedly tells of a child’s character from which day they are born on, the line about Wednesday’s child inspired the name of The Addams Family character, as it spoke to her melancholic and moody personality.

Because of it’s dark themes and comedic nature, adults have really gravitated towards the show and sought out toys for grown-ups featuring the characters, including vinyl figures to display, plush toys and LEGO to recreate their favourite scenes.

How many seasons are there?

As of writing, there are presently two seasons of Wednesday available to watch, with a third confirmed to start production in 2026. The first revolves around Wednesday starting at Nevermore Academy and discovering the bizarre goings on.

By the second season, Wednesday has established herself at school, but younger brotherly Pugsley has now started and has haplessly found himself looking after a zombie. Meanwhile Wednesday is on the trail of a creepy character who is obsessed with dolls. Considerably darker in tone than the first series, the second opens more on the Addams family as a whole.
