What is Masters of the Universe?
A sci-fi action fantasy franchise that incorporates elements of sword and sorcery, Masters of the Universe brought the world iconic characters like He-Man, Skeletor, and She-Ra. First introduced as action-figures back in 1982, their backstory was incorporated into the included minicomics that came packaged with the toys.
However, the brand really took off with the introduction of the 1983 animated TV series, which ran for 130 episodes and introduced new characters and storylines as well as fleshing out the universe in which they inhabit.
The first toys started with a Conan the Barbarian inspired action toy that would go on to become the model for He-Man, the prince of the planet Eternia who draws mystical powers from his Castle Grayskull. The evil Skeletor is desperate to control the castle in order to unlock its secrets and gain the power to become master of the universe, and He-Man and his cohort often come up against Skeletor and his band of villains when protecting the secrets within.
Being such a long running franchise, there are toys that appeal to newer, younger fans as well as toys for grown-ups that will enthral enthusiasts of the original series.
Who will be playing He-Man?
With the 2026 Masters of the Universe film, He-Man and co return to the big screen for the first time since Dolph Lundgren played him in 1987. With the latest film focussing on Prince Adam discovering his powers and alter ego as He-Man, the English actor Nicholas Galitzine plays the lead.
With Idris Elba as He-Man’s right hand, Man-At-Arms, and Camila Mendes as his ally Teela, the cast is packed with stars including Jared Leto as the dastardly Skeletor and Alison Brie as his companion Evil-Lyn.
What is Skeletor’s real name & is he He-Man's brother?
Skeletor is the main antagonist of Masters of The Universe, a blue skinned, skull-faced wizard. Although original minicomics suggested he was from another dimension and came to invade He-Man’s universe, it is later suggested he is actually the long-lost brother of King Radnor, He-Man’s father, and he has come to usurp the throne of Eternia.
So no, Skeletor is not He-Man’s brother but rather his uncle. Once the sorcerer known as Keldor, he tried to dispatch King Radnor with corrosive acid, but this was deflected into his face to leave him with his skull exposed.
