What exactly is a Fuggler doll?
Cute but creepy, adorable yet ugly, realistic yet absurd, Fugglers are the plush soft toys full of contradictions. Strangely alluring, these bizarre creatures are misfit toys that often have unnervingly realistic teeth and button eyes.
Exciting and different to the all too typical cutesy toys out there, Fugglers bring a brilliant grotesque that creates a thrilling sensation and allows us all to better understand, it’s what’s on the inside that counts.
What's the story behind Fugglers?
Fugglers began as a quirky idea by British artist Louise McGettrick, who created a strange toy with human-like teeth as a gift for her husband (and got a hilariously freaked-out reaction!). That reaction made her laugh and inspired her to create more.
She started selling them on Etsy, where they quickly became a hit. Now loved worldwide—even by Hollywood director James Gunn - Fugglers are known for their weird, wild charm.
What do Fuggler monsters do?
Fuggler monsters may seem like harmless soft toys, but the official website does come with the warning that these Fugglers are up to no good. They may raid your fridge, shave your pets, warp the time-space continuum and get involved in all sorts of nonsense.
Befriending a Fuggler is an invitation to get up to mischief and mayhem, and if you adopt one of these troublemakers into your home, you may find strange goings-on starting to happen.
What are the teeth made of?
Urban myth once saw people online claim that these toys used real baby teeth, but the truth is, no matter how realistic they may look, they’re actually hard moulded acrylic plastic.
Designed to resemble real teeth, they’re often stained, cracked or misshapen to add to the spooky effect of these odd-looking animals.
Are Fugglers Worth Collecting?
Fugglers have a unique and humorous appeal thanks to their gap-toothed grins and wonky charm, so collecting them can bring a great sense of satisfaction. Internationally loved, there are regionally exclusive toys and themed sets to find, so collecting can be both a challenge and a joy.
Although financial gain is never a guarantee, some of the toys have been shown to increase in value over time, and with demand. Highly collectable for their quirky nature, fan interest is strong.
What age are Fugglers appropriate for?
Despite their rather odd looks, Fugglers remain, in essence, soft toys. Their hard plastic parts, like buttons and teeth, don’t make them suitable for particularly young children but otherwise they are great for ages 4 and up.
However, because of their collectable nature, unlikely designs and mischievous characterisation, they have captured the imaginations of teenagers and adults alike.
What is the rarest Fuggler?
With so many unique and awesome Fugglers to get your hands on, some may be harder to find than others, with differences in rarity and desirability. The rarest Fugglers to find are the original handmade ones by Louis McGettrick, which were created pre-2018 and are no longer in production. As such, these are highly sought after by serious collectors who want to get their hands on a bit of Fuggler history.
Since moving to mainstream manufacturing, specific Chase Variants that come in a 1:24 ratio are quite uncommon and models like Mr. Buttons (Dark Brown) Suspicious Fox, and the Winged Bat are all hard to come by. These variants can be identified by a gold button on their behind and often featuring special fabrics. Regional exclusives are also often produced in limited numbers (like the Green Bat) or Gold Edition Fugglers, that have golden teeth or other shiny characteristics, are rarer than most.
